This week, Henry packed four school lunches and purchased one cafeteria lunch.
Henry's favorite lunchbox this year has been his purple Bentgo Kids container. He chose the color himself. He especially likes all the sections in the box so that he can have lots of different foods at lunch. In January, I even purchased a set of silicone muffin cups so that he would be encouraged to use his Planetbox Shuttle as often with its single divider.
The past few weeks, Henry has started to choose his Planetbox Shuttle container first. He no longer wants to use his Bentgo Kids box because his friends say that purple is "not cool." This week he also requested that we not use the pink and purple silicone muffin cups in the Planetbox because those are "girl" colors.
Until his fifth birthday, Henry always picked "rainbow" as his favorite color. He loves wearing bright and colorful clothing, especially his purple sweatpants. Now he has decided that red is his favorite because it is the first choice of the other boys at school. He does not want anything that has pink or purple if he can avoid it.
We've had several discussions about how colors are not for boys or girls. Our state university sports teams proudly wear purple and Daddy has several purple shirts. We've tried to reinforce that he can choose to like things even when his friends don't like the same things.
On Friday evening, he confided that he actually still does like purple but he asked us not to tell the other boys at school since he was afraid they might not want to be friends if they found out. I feel sad that he is not confident enough to stick up for his own opinions and preferences at school, but we will keep supporting his color choices however he may choose to express himself.
